WWE Divas
WWE Divas is a term that the World Wrestling Entertainment promotion company coined and uses today. The term is meant for the female talent that passes through the WWE doors. It can refer to female wrestlers, ring announcers, backstage interviewers and managers or valets.
Years ago in 1996-2000, it was Sunny, Chyna, Marlena, and Sable that dominated the WWE world. Of course, the sexuality and beauty were there with the WWE Divas, however Chyna had a masculine build that stirred up a lot of controversy. Her look also gave Playboy something that they had never seen before.
A few years later and Lita came onto the scene. Her wrestling moves were extensive and much more ambitious than those before her. Moonsaults and diving hurricanranas became household moves and made Lita a much see part of WWE. Next came Trish Stratus who started as a valet, but kept the WWE Divas sexuality alive in the ring.
From 2002 to 2005, things heated up for the WWE Divas. The name change from WWF to WWE became permanent and the reality show WWE Tough Enough came onto the scene. It had raw sexuality with women aspiring to be wrestlers. Trish Stratus, Victoria, and others started to compete in contests that only men had done before too. A few years ago there used to be a diva search that was held every summer. This was to find new women for every outlet used on the show.
From 2006 to now, many women have passed through the doors of the WWE Divas. Some left to retire while others moved on to bigger and better opportunities. In late 2008, Gail Kim was left as the only diva to welcome in the new generation of WWE talent. Different matches for the ladies made the company and popularity grow and Trish Stratus, Lita, and Sunny have all three came back for guest appearances on the show.
Women have benefited greatly from being a part of WWE Divas. They have become household names with a popularity that has lasted for many years. Men’s interest magazines and Playboy have been a part of their lives as well. Some have even appeared in WWE and other product commercials. There is an annual photo shoot for the divas and a Babe of the Year award, although it ended in 2004 and a Rookie Diva of the Year award in 2005.
